Two Dutch Girls on a Road Trip to Wiltshire

Road Trip 2017 (2) - Richmond to Chawton to Salisbury.

Good afternoon! Would you like to join me for the second part of my road trip in the South-West of England? A long time wish of my daughter...

Nobody Tells You Out Loud - So, People of Ukraine, Thank You!

Today we of The Netherlands remember the victims of MH17.
And amongst all the blah-blah, and the heartfelt proper words that actually mean something, I want to add my own.
Whilst we dither about a memorial people can actually touch, there has been one erected in Rozsypne ages ago.

And I would like to thank the people responsible.
Simply: from one human being to another.

Thank you!

Happy October To You!

Okay. Time to own up...
Hey there, you folks in the Ukraine, help me out here!
Illuminate me. WHY is it I have more readers from your country than from my own?
It baffles me!
Not that I am complaining, mind you. Nice to see you, any time.

My taxus tree is in fruit, isn't it gorgeous?

Okay. Time to make myself a cup of tea. I have a nasty cold and am in need of hydration. Have a lovely Sunday and until next time!

Ukraine and United States - for you!

Good morning to you! (It is Sunday morning over here...)
Especially for all the hundreds of people who have read my blog in the Ukraine and in the United States during the last month:

Hi there!
I hope you will have a good day today, where ever you may be, whatever you may do. Try to spend it with people you like, or even love.

And remember: we are all equal. Fuck politics. Ordinary people, like you and me, can make a difference. All we have to do is remember that, and start with the people around us. Take a deep breath - and take the first step. Peace, my friend!

See you!

Preparation Is All - Or Is it?

Hi there,
My stats are still showing a very high count of readers in the Ukraine - peace to you!
Don't worry, like Martin Luther King I have chosen Love; Hate would be a too large burden to bear.

Whilst the news is almost unbearable to watch or listen to, and The Netherlands are veering wildly between grief, shock, anger, diplomacy and the knowledge that for almost 17 million of us life simply must and does go on, I am preparing for my wild plan to cycle the length and nearly the breadth of my country.

I have taken a good look at the route last night, and already doubt is stretching its knobbly fingers towards my resolve. Golly, that is quite a stretch! And I am a middle-aged untrained  chubby woman with weak knees and muscles that are used to standing in front of a whiteboard or sitting behind a desk grading papers...

Can you see Rotterdam in the middle on the left?  35 Km below that city is my starting point. And I will have to cross my first large river by ferry after 15 km. And do you see that E22 dyke right at the top, stretching from Wieringen towards Friesland over the IJsselmeer? That's the first goal.
I have calculated that it will take me 3 days to reach that dyke, the Afsluitdijk. That is if all goes according to plan.
Those first 3 days I will be travelling across a built-up country of endless towns, called the Randstad. Rotterdam, The Hague, Leiden and all assorted villages and towns in between have melded together into one long habited and very busy area. (If you live in Greater London, or Greater Los Angeles, you will know what I mean by this)

My country is tiny compared to that of some of you, obviously. When you are in Australia, or Canada, or the USA, you'll laugh at our distances.
But to me they are very real, and a bit daunting.

And take a look at what I am cycling over....those dark blue, but also the light blue, bits are the areas below sea level. But here I am an experienced wetlander; I know those dykes are pretty reliable, no worries there.

Right. Back to my maps. Have a good day!

Peace, Peace, Peace! All it takes is You...

Good evening from the sweltering Wetlands. We are experiencing an official heatwave, and that is SO rare in my country that everyone is out of sorts.
You simply cannot win, can you? Our normal wet & windy weather makes us complain, and this hot & sunny weather ditto...
Personally I love it! After 3 days of non-stop painting our living room is pristine white and very peaceful, and as from noon today I have been lounging under my garden umbrella-ella-ella.

But what I want to talk to you about, is not the glorious sun, but the news today. I only read the headlines on the internet just now, and they almost made me weep.

Israël and Palestine are killing each other's citizens. A never-ending story of hate.
Ukraïne seperatists shoot an airliner out of the sky (which left from Schiphol= Amsterdam Airport) with my fellow countrymen on board. What on earth? What wrong have these tourists done to you?
Some guy beats up an old couple after he (!) has first caused an accident and they have the temerity to complain about this.
Some other guy abducts an 15 year old retarded girl in the Rotterdam tube and takes her to a house where he and 3 friends abuse her.

I stopped reading then.
There's nothing I can do about all of this. So I could shrug and put it out of my mind. And concentrate on my lovely garden.

Instead, I am going to do something and then I will take a walk through my garden and let all negativity flow from my thoughts.

I am going to send thoughts of Peace to all of you.

PEACE!

Use them wisely!!!
